San Diego, Calif. – On May 20, 2024, California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria presented the Second Annual Dr. Shirley N. Weber High School Voter Registration Awards to high schools in the greater San Diego area. These awards recognize schools for their efforts in civic engagement by registering and pre-registering qualified students to vote.

Secretary Weber and Mayor Gloria awarded trophies, banners, and certificates to Mission Bay High School, Crawford High School, Madison High School, San Diego Met High School, the Preuss School, High Tech High International, Rancho Bernardo High School, Mira Mesa High School, E3 Civic High, Canyon Hills School, Lincoln High School, Morse High School, La Jolla High School, University City High School, Southwest High School, Mt. Everest Academy, San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Mark Twain High School, and Westview High School.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to formally recognize schools that champion voter registration,” noted Secretary Weber. “Voting is making one’s voice heard and having one’s voice heard is a crucial component of democracy. By supporting voter registration and pre-registering these schools and education leaders have helped students position themselves to have a say in decisions that impact them their families and their communities.”

Mayor Gloria encouraged high schools in the greater San Diego area to become more engaged in pre-registering students to vote. In partnership with Inspire2Vote a nonpartisan 501(c)3 organization Mayor Gloria named the award after Secretary Weber.

California allows individuals aged 16 and 17 who meet specific requirements to pre-register to vote. Once they turn 18 their registration becomes active. Since the inception of the Secretary of State Pre-registration initiative in 2016 more than 1.2 million students have pre-registered to vote.

More information about pre-registering can be found at www.sos.ca.gov/elections/pre-register-16-vote-18/pre-reg-faqs.
