UC Davis addresses student protests and labor strikes

On May 6, a group named Davis Popular University for the Liberation of Palestine erected tents on the Quad at UC Davis, mirroring actions taken on campuses nationwide. On May 15, the United Auto Workers Local 4811 authorized a strike against the University of California, with strike activities commencing on the UC Davis campus on May 27. The university has issued statements and provided information regarding its response to these developments.

On May 29, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Pablo Reguerin, Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies Jean-Pierre Delaplanque, and Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education addressed disruptions in classrooms and other campus facilities through a message titled "Message Regarding Recent Disruptions to the Academic Mission" sent to students, staff, and faculty.

On May 15, demonstrators unaffiliated with the encampment on the Quad led a march through six campus buildings, briefly entering classrooms in some instances. University leaders are gathering more information to address any concerns related to this conduct. Students can learn more about their rights and responsibilities related to Freedom of Expression through an online resource.

There have been no arrests related to the Memorial Union Quad encampment or counter-demonstrations as of May 15. However, there have been some heated moments requiring security intervention, including a brief encounter on May 14. Efforts were made by students, security staff, and others to de-escalate these situations promptly.

The university responds swiftly to complaints of offensive behavior by providing support and resources to affected parties and reviewing allegations under its anti-discrimination policy.

Members of the UC Davis community who believe they have been subject to harassment or discrimination may file complaints with the Harassment & Discrimination Assistance and Prevention Program (HDAPP). HDAPP also offers supportive measures to mitigate impacts on work or learning environments. Additional resources include:
