Governor Gavin Newsom announced the appointment of Morgan Carvajal as Appointments Secretary in the Office of the Governor, succeeding Cathryn Rivera, who has held the role since June 2019.
“Cathryn has done tremendous work to help build an administration that better reflects Californians’ rich diversity of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences. I’m grateful for her deep commitment to public service and wish Cathryn well in her next chapter,” stated Governor Newsom.
“Morgan has been a key member of the appointments team over the past four years, and I thank her for her leadership in continuing this important work at every level of state government to better serve all Californians,” added Newsom.
Morgan Carvajal, from Sacramento, has served as Chief Deputy Appointments Secretary since 2020. Her previous roles include Legislative Advocate for the California Medical Association from 2018 to 2020 and for Hernandez Strategy Group LLC from 2013 to 2018. She also worked as a Legislative Aide in the Office of State Senator Fran Pavley from 2010 to 2013 and was an Operations Development Assistant at Sonoma State University from 2006 to 2010. This position does not require Senate confirmation, and compensation is set at $228,492. Carvajal is affiliated with the Democratic Party.
