Sacramento, Calif. – California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., today issued a statement on the passing of Civil Rights Icon Reverend James Lawson:
“I offer heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of civil rights icon Reverend James Lawson, whose life and work were dedicated to nonviolent direct action, educating others, and peaceful justice for all.
His passing occurs as we approach the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer and Reverend Lawson played a key role in preparing civil rights leaders, including the Freedom Riders, to peacefully handle the backlash of challenging racist laws and policies."
