Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed a state of emergency in Butte County to bolster the response to the Thompson Fire, which has burned 3,002 acres and necessitated the evacuation of thousands of residents. A copy of the proclamation is available online.
The Governor announced that California secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to ensure resource availability for suppressing the rapidly spreading fire.
Amid extreme fire weather conditions across Northern California, Governor Newsom received briefings from CAL FIRE and CalOES officials at the CAL FIRE McClellan Air Tanker Base regarding the Thompson Fire response and this year's wildfire season.
"We are using every available tool to tackle this fire and will continue to work closely with our local and federal partners to support impacted communities," said Governor Newsom. "As we head into some of the most challenging months of wildfire season, the state is better prepared than ever to protect at-risk communities with new tools, technology, and resources."
Earlier this week, Governor Newsom activated the State Operations Center to coordinate California's response efforts, dispatch mutual aid, and support local communities facing threats from heat and fire during an early July heat wave.
