California has deployed 61 law enforcement officers to support security efforts at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. This action is part of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) and involves collaboration with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners.
The deployment, coordinated by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), includes 40 members of the California Highway Patrol and officers from Bakersfield, Fresno, and Long Beach police departments. The request for these officers was planned since May 2024.
Governor Gavin Newsom stated, “Public safety transcends party lines. California is proud to support our law enforcement colleagues in Wisconsin during this important political event. Working together, we are helping to provide a safe and secure environment for all participants at the Republican National Convention.”
Nancy Ward, Cal OES Director, emphasized the importance of supporting their counterparts in Wisconsin: “It is critical we support our law enforcement colleagues in Wisconsin and the safety of participants at this significant event. California’s peace officers are well-trained and experienced in handling large-scale events, and we are confident in their ability to enhance the security operations in Milwaukee.”
The responsibilities of these officers may include crowd management, traffic control, and ensuring public safety throughout the convention's duration. EMAC is a cooperative agreement among states that provides mutual support during emergencies and planned events.
