California secures federal assistance to support response to Hawarden Fire

SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to aid in combating the rapidly spreading Hawarden Fire in Riverside County.

The Hawarden Fire, which ignited earlier today near the city of Riverside, has already burned over 492 acres. The blaze has prompted evacuations of more than 2,500 people and is threatening homes in the area.

The FMAG, provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund on a cost-share basis, will assist local, state, and tribal agencies by offering 75-percent reimbursement for eligible fire suppression costs. Administered through the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), this program delivers swift financial assistance to communities affected by fires.

Recently, California also secured FMAGs for the Thompson and French fires, which burned nearly 4,000 acres in early July. These previous measures taken by Governor Newsom supplied essential resources to address these fires and protect communities in Butte and Mariposa counties.
