A recent joint enforcement operation led by the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) has resulted in the seizure and destruction of over $2.3 million worth of illegally cultivated cannabis. The operation, which took place in Alameda County, also led to the confiscation of a significant amount of dangerous illegal pesticides used in the unlawful grow.

Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California’s Unified Cannabis Enforcement Taskforce (UCETF) seized more than 2,652 plants during this single operation. He emphasized the health risks posed by illegal cannabis and its environmental impact: “Illegal cannabis from outside the safe, regulated market poses serious health risks and fuels criminal organizations responsible for devastating environmental damage. I thank our state and local enforcement agencies for their collaboration in taking down this illegal enterprise, protecting both public safety and the environment from the harmful impacts of the illicit cannabis market.”

The UCETF action was carried out with assistance from multiple state and local law enforcement partners in Oakland's Coliseum neighborhood. Alongside illegally cultivated cannabis, authorities seized several bags of an illegal pesticide identified as isoprocarb by the Alameda County Agricultural Commission. Isoprocarb is an unregistered pesticide toxic if inhaled or swallowed. Other potentially harmful substances were also discovered, including unidentified liquids and additional illegal pesticides labeled “Golden Eagle.”

“This operation clearly demonstrates our commitment to protecting consumer safety and holding those who threaten it accountable,” said DCC Chief of Law Enforcement Bill Jones. He acknowledged the crucial role played by state and local partners such as the Department of Pesticide Regulation and Alameda County Agricultural Commission.

Ken Everett, Deputy Director of Enforcement at the Department of Pesticide Regulation, highlighted the importance of enforcing pesticide laws: “It is critical that any pesticide used on cannabis is registered and all laws and regulations are followed. Enforcing these laws protects people and the environment from potential risks and impacts associated with pesticide use.”

During this operation, UCETF removed 116.95 pounds of processed cannabis flower along with 2,652 plants cultivated in an industrial building. Several containers filled with harmful pesticides were also confiscated. One individual was arrested for unlicensed cultivation, possession for sale, maintaining a drug house, and possession of an unregistered pesticide.

“UCETF is dedicated to strengthening the licensed cannabis industry by using a multi-agency strategy to disrupt illegal cannabis operations,” said UCETF Chief Policy Coordinator Jaydeep Bhatia.

The enforcement action involved various taskforce partners including California Department of Fish and Wildlife, San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, California Department of Pesticide Regulation, California Department of Tax and Fee Administration; alongside local support from Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, Alameda County Agricultural Commissioner’s Office, and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

Governor Newsom has directed state agencies to aggressively target organized criminal enterprises involved in illicit cannabis markets due to their threat to California's legal market as well as environmental harm caused by unregulated practices.
