California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, alongside the Latino Community Foundation and Prospera, highlighted the issue of Latina wage disparity on Latina Equal Pay Day. The event focused on the wage gap faced by Latinas in the United States, who earn approximately 51 cents for every dollar earned by a non-Hispanic white man. This pay discrepancy contributes to significant financial challenges over a lifetime.

During the event, Siebel Newsom discussed with local Latina entrepreneurs about the ongoing wage gap and their efforts to build wealth for their families and communities. She stated, "Latinas are so much of what makes California and this nation thrive, despite continuing to face significant barriers to wealth and opportunity because of the wage and wealth gaps and systemic inequities. Latina entrepreneurs, in particular, are a powerful counterforce and pathway for economic growth and community uplift."

Sylvia Pérez Cash from the Latino Community Foundation emphasized the importance of investing in organizations like Prospera that empower Latina entrepreneurs. "Across our country, Latinas are key drivers of innovation and growth," she said.

The discussion also covered how nearly half of Latina mothers serve as primary breadwinners in their households while facing poverty levels at nearly 30%. Without addressing these disparities, Latinas entering today's workforce might lose up to $1.3 million over a 40-year career.

Claudia Arroyo from Prospera shared her vision: "Together, we are building a California where Latina women not only survive but thrive as entrepreneurs and leaders."

Ingrid Sanchez from Niños Sanos, Seguros y Felices reflected on her experiences as a Latina entrepreneur: "Latina Equal Pay Day reminds me of the importance to create businesses that reflect our values of justice and equity."

Siebel Newsom has prioritized closing these gaps through initiatives such as California for ALL Women. Her efforts include launching the California Equal Pay Pledge in 2019 and releasing an Equal Pay Playbook this year through her non-profit organization.
