Governor Newsom honors fallen firefighter Garret Miller

Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom have expressed their condolences following the death of Barstow Fire Protection District Fire Captain Garret Miller. In a statement, they said, "Our heartfelt sympathies are with Fire Captain Miller’s family, friends, colleagues and everyone grieving his passing. His bravery and dedication to protecting Californians will never be forgotten."

Fire Captain Garret Miller passed away on October 21, 2024, due to an on-duty medical emergency. He was 44 years old. Captain Miller had been with the Barstow Fire Protection District since 2017. He also served in the U.S. Forest Service-San Bernardino National Forest and Fort Irwin Fire Department.

Captain Miller is survived by his three children. As a tribute to him, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
