Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared November 20, 2024, as "Transgender Day of Remembrance" in California. The proclamation was made to honor the lives lost due to violence and discrimination against transgender individuals.

The Governor emphasized the need for continued efforts to ensure safety and equality for the LGBTQ community. "Today is a stark reminder of the unacceptable violence and discrimination that transgender and gender non-conforming people – our loved ones and friends, co-workers and community members – face daily, simply for existing," said Newsom.

In collaboration with the LGBTQ Caucus, California has implemented measures to protect this community. These include creating safe environments in schools, enhancing anti-hate programs, improving security for at-risk nonprofits, supporting healthcare access, and advancing health equity.

Governor Newsom reiterated California's commitment: "California will always fight for and celebrate our LGBTQ community’s right to live their lives out loud." He highlighted that raising the trans pride flag over the State Capitol symbolizes the state's values of respect, equality, and acceptance.

The proclamation concluded with Governor Newsom's formal declaration: "NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim November 20, 2024 as 'Transgender Day of Remembrance.'"

Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber also attested to this declaration.
