California Attorney General Rob Bonta visited Sharia’s Closet in San Diego to discuss safe donation practices during the holiday season. As part of his responsibilities, Attorney General Bonta oversees charities and professional fundraisers in California. He has the authority to investigate and take legal action against any charity involved in fraudulent activities or misuse of charitable assets.

"As the holiday season approaches, Californians once again exemplify the true spirit of generosity by volunteering time, donating goods, or making financial contributions to support charitable organizations doing incredible work in our communities. Sharia’s Closet is one of those organizations, and provides free, emergency clothing, diapers, and household essentials to those experiencing financial hardship or facing times of crisis," said Attorney General Bonta. "I want to thank them for their critical work and for partnering with us as we share tips to avoid charity scams."

Shamine Linton, CEO of Sharia’s Closet, emphasized the impact of donations: "At Sharia's Closet, we believe that a small act of kindness can make a world of difference. Every donation, every moment of support, and every effort to help transforms lives."

Attorney General Bonta shared several tips on how donors can protect themselves from charity fraud:

1. Verify Registration Status: Ensure charities are registered with the Attorney General’s Registry of Charities and Fundraisers before donating.

2. Trustworthy Organizations: Research charities thoroughly before donating to ensure funds are used effectively.

3. Telemarketer Caution: Avoid pressure tactics from telemarketers; consider direct contact with organizations instead.

4. Beware Fake Websites/Emails: Watch out for deceptive URLs or email addresses that mimic legitimate charities.

5. Similar-Sounding Names: Be cautious about organizations with names resembling well-known charities.

6. Social Media Vigilance: Scrutinize fundraising campaigns on social media platforms carefully.

7. Protect Personal Information: Avoid sharing sensitive information like Social Security numbers when donating.

8. Electronic Donation Precautions: Confirm authenticity when making electronic donations via text or QR codes.
