California Attorney General Rob Bonta has joined a coalition of 51 attorneys general in sending warning letters to four telecom companies accused of transmitting illegal robocall traffic. These calls often impersonate government officials or involve scams related to auto warranties, tech support, utilities, the IRS, or Social Security Administration. This action is part of ongoing efforts to protect consumers from such scams.
Attorney General Bonta emphasized the impact of these calls: “The robocalls that disrupt our lives and bombard us with never-ending voicemails aren’t just annoying; in many cases they are illegal and a vehicle for harmful scams.”
The warning letters were sent to KWK Communications, Inc.; Inbound Communications, Inc.; AKA Management, Inc.; and CallVox LLC. The Anti-Robocall Multistate Litigation Task Force warned these companies to cease transmitting unlawful call traffic immediately as it violates state and federal laws. Failure to comply may result in further legal actions. The findings have also been shared with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for consideration of appropriate steps.
The Task Force consists of 51 bipartisan attorneys general who investigate and take legal action against those responsible for routing significant volumes of illegal robocall traffic across the United States.
Attorney General Bonta is dedicated to enforcing consumer protections both within California and nationwide. His efforts include joining coalitions that support FCC rules designed to curb illegal robocalls and addressing issues related to emerging AI technology's impact on consumer protection from such calls.
In May 2023, Attorney General Bonta was part of a lawsuit against Avid Telecom for allegedly facilitating billions of unlawful robocalls involving various scams.
Copies of the letters sent by the coalition are available for public access.
