California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a consumer alert regarding charitable donations during the holiday season. In collaboration with Midtown HART, an organization addressing homelessness in Sacramento, Bonta provided guidance on safe donating practices to prevent scams.
Attorney General Bonta emphasized the importance of ensuring that donations reach their intended recipients. "This time of year, as we gather with loved ones and reflect on the blessings in our lives, many individuals and families feel inspired to give back to their communities," he stated. He praised Midtown HART for its efforts in supporting those experiencing homelessness and urged Californians to be vigilant against potential scammers.
Cory Cooper, Board President of Midtown HART, expressed gratitude for Bonta's visit. "We appreciate Attorney General Bonta and his staff visiting us today as part of their holiday drive to give guidance on safe donating," Cooper said. He highlighted the organization's work in serving over 400 guests weekly with essential services provided by nearly 50 volunteers.
The Attorney General's office outlined several tips for safe donating:
1. Verify Registration: Ensure charities are registered with California's Registry of Charities and Fundraisers.
2. Trustworthy Organizations: Research charities before donating to understand how funds are allocated.
3. Avoid Pressure: Be cautious of telemarketers using pressure tactics.
4. Watch for Scams: Be wary of look-alike websites or emails mimicking legitimate charities.
5. Deceptive Tactics: Beware of similar-sounding charity names and unsolicited emails.
6. Social Media Caution: Verify legitimacy when donating through social networks.
7. Protect Personal Information: Do not share sensitive information like Social Security numbers or credit card details.
8. Electronic Donations: Confirm the authenticity of electronic donation requests.
