Governor Newsom announces new appointments across multiple state departments

Governor Gavin Newsom has announced several appointments to various state positions. Christina Dempsey of Roseville will serve as Deputy Director of Government Affairs at the California Department of Cannabis Control. Dempsey, who has been with the department since 2021, previously held roles including Deputy Director of Policy & Research and Acting Deputy Director of External Affairs. Her experience also includes work at the California Department of Public Health and Grand Central Communications. Dempsey holds degrees from Rollins College and Florida State University.

Stephanie Ogren from Sacramento is appointed as Deputy Secretary and Chief Counsel at the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Ogren's previous roles include General Counsel at the Office of Energy Infrastructure Safety and Assistant Chief Counsel with the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. She earned her law degree from UC Davis School of Law.

Paula LaBrie has been reappointed as Chair to the California Gambling Control Commission, a position she has held since 2021. LaBrie's career includes significant roles at the California State Lottery and legal positions with various organizations. She holds degrees from UC College of the Law, San Francisco, University of the Pacific, and CSU East Bay.

William Liu continues his role at the California Gambling Control Commission where he has served since 2021. His background includes being a member of the Gaming Policy Advisory Committee and financial leadership roles in state departments. Liu is an alumnus of CSU East Bay.

Edwin Lowry remains on the Occupational Safety and Health Appeals Board, having served since 2011. Lowry's career spans roles in environmental law enforcement and regulation within state government agencies. He studied at Stanford Law School and Yale University.

Victoria Hassid is reappointed to the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board, where she has served since 2020. Her past positions include key roles in industrial relations within state government departments and legal research positions affiliated with UC Davis School of Law.

All appointments are effective immediately with specified compensations for each role; some require Senate confirmation while others do not.
