Governor Gavin Newsom has released a statement on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. In his statement, Governor Newsom expressed his condolences and reflected on Carter's legacy as a leader dedicated to human rights and democracy.

"Jennifer and I join the country and the world in mourning the passing of President Jimmy Carter, a tireless champion for human rights and democracy whose unparalleled life of service made the world a better place," Newsom stated.

He described Carter as "a man of rare character – whose beliefs ran true and ran deep, whose moral compass never wavered." He praised Carter's ability to connect with people across different faiths and factions while addressing domestic needs. Despite facing challenges, Newsom noted that Carter's energy and spirit remained strong.

Newsom highlighted that service was integral to Carter's life. After his presidency, he continued to work towards global peace and health through the Carter Center, impacting many lives over four decades.

"President Carter’s candor and compassion, moral leadership, and sense of duty set a standard we all should aspire to," said Newsom. He emphasized that Carter's example shows that common ground can be found despite differences.

Governor Newsom extended his sympathies to the Carter family and others grieving this loss. In tribute to President Carter, flags at the State Capitol will be flown at half-staff.
