California's high-speed rail project has entered a significant phase with the start of track-laying work. Governor Gavin Newsom joined local leaders and workers near Bakersfield to celebrate this milestone and the completion of a key 22-mile stretch known as Construction Package 4 (CP 4). This marks the southernmost section currently under construction, featuring civil structures such as overpasses and viaducts.
Governor Newsom stated, "No state in America is closer to launching high-speed rail than California – and today, we just took a massive step forward. We’re moving into the track-laying phase, completing structures for key segments, and laying the groundwork for a high-speed rail network." The project has created over 14,500 jobs since its inception.
The California High-Speed Rail Authority CEO Ian Choudri emphasized the importance of partnerships in advancing the project: “Today we’re recognizing the system’s progress and looking ahead as we advance important partnerships and track work that moves us closer to operations while putting Californians to work.”
Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer highlighted the project's impact on local communities: “High-Speed Rail represents a transformative opportunity for Fresno. It’s not just about getting people where they need to go faster—it’s about connecting our community to the broader state and driving economic growth."
The rail authority is collaborating with Brightline West and High Desert Corridor to establish an interoperable system that connects Northern California through Central Valley to Southern California and Las Vegas.
Passenger service is anticipated between 2030 and 2033, contributing significantly to Governor Newsom's infrastructure agenda by creating jobs throughout California.
