Governor Gavin Newsom announced that survivors of the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area can now apply for federal assistance. This development comes as a Major Disaster has been declared by President Joe Biden, allowing affected residents to seek aid based on the specific damages they have experienced.

Governor Newsom stated, "To the thousands of Californians who are impacted by these unprecedented fires, know that we have your back. Thanks to our strong partnership with the federal government and the President’s swift action, Californians can apply now for federal assistance. Even as we make resources available to help folks recover, we’re still laser-focused on fighting these fires and protecting lives and property."

A new website, CA.gov/LAfires, has been launched to provide wildfire survivors with information on how to apply for this federal aid. The site serves as a central hub for resources from state, local, and federal government entities.

Residents and business owners who have suffered losses due to the wildfires in Los Angeles County can apply for disaster assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362. Assistance is also accessible via FEMA's smartphone application and is offered in over 40 languages.

In addition to these measures, disaster recovery centers will soon be established in coordination with Cal OES and FEMA. These centers aim to support those who have endured disaster-related losses or damages.

The state's response includes deploying more than 12,000 personnel such as firefighters and guard service members along with over 1,660 pieces of firefighting equipment including engines and aircraft. Governor Newsom had previously declared a state of emergency and issued an executive order supporting communities impacted by the fires. Following this declaration, President Biden approved a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration providing further federal assistance.
