Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order aimed at expediting recovery efforts in Los Angeles following recent wildfires. The order focuses on debris removal and preparing for potential mudslides and flooding in burned areas. With the winter season still ahead, there is a heightened risk of rainstorms causing further damage.
Newsom emphasized the importance of swift action, stating, "We’re working in real-time to ensure a fast and organized recovery effort – giving Angelenos the tools they need to rebuild faster and stronger." He added that California's experience with wildfire recovery will aid in supporting those affected by the fires.
The state has also prepositioned firefighting personnel and equipment throughout Southern California in anticipation of severe fire weather expected from tomorrow through Wednesday. Resources include 60 engines, 8 helicopters, and 13 dozers and water tender trucks distributed across Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties.
California's response includes mobilizing over 15,000 personnel such as firefighters and guard servicemembers. The state is utilizing more than 1,900 pieces of firefighting equipment to combat ongoing fires.
Earlier this week, Newsom declared a state of emergency. President Biden approved Newsom’s request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to support response efforts against the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades Fires.
