Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that California will receive expanded federal assistance to aid local governments in repairing or replacing public infrastructure damaged by recent firestorms in Los Angeles. This support comes as an addition to the existing aid provided under the Major Disaster Declaration by the Biden-Harris Administration.
The funding, which is part of FEMA's public assistance grant program, will cover various projects such as debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairs to roads, bridges, water control facilities, public buildings, utilities, parks, and recreational areas. Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of this funding in helping communities rebuild their essential infrastructure swiftly.
"This new funding will help us repair infrastructure like roads and bridges, public facilities and parks — the places that bring our communities together," stated Governor Newsom.
While these funds are allocated to government entities and certain private nonprofits, they aim to benefit entire communities by addressing disaster-related debris cleanup and restoring critical services like utilities and water systems. Eligible applicants for this funding include state agencies, tribal governments, local authorities, and specific nonprofit organizations.
In response to displaced residents' needs following the wildfires in Los Angeles County, FEMA has also introduced transitional sheltering assistance for short-term lodging. Additionally, individual assistance is available for affected Californians and businesses covering temporary accommodation costs and financial aid for destroyed property.
Residents seeking help can visit CA.gov/LAfires or apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov. Assistance is accessible through multiple channels including phone calls or using a smartphone application with support available in over 40 languages.
To further expedite recovery efforts in Los Angeles County after the fires' devastation, Governor Newsom proposed $2.5 billion in additional state funding aimed at emergency response efforts. This proposal includes initiatives focused on recovery activities such as cleanup operations alongside enhanced wildfire preparedness measures while reopening schools impacted by fire damage remains a priority too.
