Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order to protect tenants in Los Angeles County from eviction if they provide shelter to survivors of the recent firestorms. The order prevents landlords from using the unlawful detainer process to evict tenants who are hosting displaced individuals, although it does not prevent enforcement of other lease terms related to criminal activity or property damage. This measure will remain in effect until March 8, 2025.
Governor Newsom stated, "At a time when so many have been suddenly displaced, we need more housing and shelter than ever. Opening your place of residence to help shelter those in need is not only encouraged and generous, but deserves to be protected."
This executive order is part of a broader effort by Governor Newsom to aid recovery and support survivors following the devastating fires. Other actions include providing tax relief by postponing tax filing deadlines for Los Angeles County taxpayers, streamlining rebuilding processes by suspending certain permitting requirements, and fast-tracking temporary housing solutions.
Additionally, measures have been taken to mobilize debris removal efforts and safeguard survivors from price gouging on essential goods and services. The Governor has also proposed $2.5 billion in additional funding for emergency response and recovery efforts.
