The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) has announced a recall and quarantine of raw whole cow milk produced by Schoch Family Farmstead, Inc. in Monterey County. The announcement was made by California State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Jones following the detection of the bacteria Campylobacter jejuni in a sample tested by the department.

The recall affects "Schoch Family Farmstead Grade A Raw Milk" distributed in half-gallon glass jugs with a "BEST BY 01/24" date marked on the cap. Consumers are advised to dispose of any remaining product, and retailers are instructed to remove it from shelves immediately. The order does not extend to other products or lots from Schoch Family Farmstead.

Campylobacteriosis symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, with most people recovering completely within a week. However, it can lead to serious infections in individuals with compromised immune systems and may cause joint pain or Guillain-Barre syndrome in rare cases. Pasteurization effectively eliminates this bacteria along with others that might be present in raw milk.
