California Attorney General Rob Bonta, alongside Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester, and the United States Department of Homeland Security, announced the launch of the Sacramento Regional Human Trafficking Task Force (SR HTTF). This marks the third team established by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) to combat human trafficking, joining existing teams in San Diego and Fresno. These teams have made significant progress statewide, leading to 707 arrests and aiding nearly 800 victims.
Attorney General Rob Bonta stated, “The objective of this task force is to use our shared intelligence to increase the total number of human trafficking investigations and prosecutions within the Sacramento area, to hold perpetrators of human trafficking accountable, and support survivors along the way.” He emphasized the importance of a trauma-informed approach with culturally competent training for task force members.
District Attorney Thien Ho expressed pride in launching this initiative during National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. “This collaborative effort with the California Attorney General’s Office, Sacramento Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations is based on our shared mission that no child or adult will live in fear of being a victim of sexual or labor exploitation,” he said.
Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester highlighted their commitment against human trafficking. "The Sacramento Police Department stands unwavering in the fight against human trafficking—a crime that strips victims of their freedom, dignity, and humanity," she remarked. She stressed that partnerships are crucial for addressing this issue from multiple angles.
Tatum King, special agent in charge for HSI San Francisco, added that united law enforcement efforts send a strong message against human trafficking. “HSI San Francisco is a proud member of this newly formed human trafficking taskforce and we look forward to working alongside our partners,” he stated.
The DOJ collaborates with various agencies through SR HTTF to enforce laws against all forms of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. The CA DOJ Victims’ Services Unit provides support services statewide for crime victims.
