Governor Gavin Newsom has announced new measures to enhance the recovery efforts following the Los Angeles firestorms. A dashboard has been launched on the CA.gov/LAfires website to monitor various aspects of recovery, including debris removal and air quality. Additionally, a recovery services finder tool is now available to connect survivors with state and federal resources such as housing and employment assistance.
Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of these updates: "We’re moving faster than ever to ensure survivors of these firestorms have all the resources they need to recover. And for the first time, survivors can access all the services available at in-person centers completely online."
The Government Operations Agency, alongside the California Department of Technology and the Office of Data and Innovation, was tasked with improving digital experiences based on feedback from those affected by the fires. Amy Tong, Secretary of the Government Operations Agency, praised their efforts: “I commend the dedicated teams at CDT and ODI for coming together, creating a plan and executing the launch of this survivor resource.”
Efforts to rebuild Los Angeles include an executive order from Governor Newsom aimed at streamlining reconstruction by suspending certain permitting requirements under state environmental laws. Tax relief measures have also been introduced, extending deadlines for tax filings in Los Angeles County.
In response to immediate housing needs, an executive order facilitates temporary housing solutions while protecting tenants from eviction if they host displaced individuals. The Governor also addressed debris removal concerns by authorizing federal hazmat crews for cleanup operations.
To prevent price gouging in affected areas, restrictions have been expanded under Governor Newsom's directives. State relief efforts include over $2.5 billion allocated for emergency response and recovery initiatives.
Education has not been overlooked; an executive order supports displaced students and impacted schools in returning to normalcy. Measures are also in place to protect victims from predatory real estate practices.
Finally, support for businesses includes deferring licensing fees and waiving other barriers that could hinder recovery efforts.
