Governor Gavin Newsom has released data on judicial appointments made during his administration. Since assuming office in 2019, Newsom has appointed 576 judges, with 131 of these appointments occurring in 2024. These appointments were selected from a pool of 1,898 applicants.

The data reveals that over half of the appointees have been women and more than half identified as Asian, Black or African American, Hispanic, or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander.

The demographic information about judges and justices is gathered by the Judicial Council of California. Additionally, State Bar membership data is collected by the California State Bar through voluntary surveys. Detailed demographic breakdowns can be accessed through respective sources.
