Governor Gavin Newsom has officially declared March 2025 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in California. This proclamation highlights the state's efforts to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, emphasizing their contributions to diverse communities.
"California is proud to join states around the country, raising awareness about the many ways in which people with intellectual and developmental disabilities contribute to strong, diverse communities across our state," said Governor Newsom. The proclamation focuses on inclusion efforts and addressing barriers faced by these individuals.
Over the past decade, California has prioritized providing resources for people with conditions like Autism and Down Syndrome. The state stands out as it offers developmental services as an entitlement and prioritizes home-based care over institutional settings. Efforts include increased pay for direct service professionals and initiatives promoting career opportunities for those with disabilities.
The California Health and Human Services Agency (CalHHS) recently released a draft of the Master Plan for Developmental Services. This plan aims to enhance quality, access, and sustainability of services for all demographics across various systems such as education, housing, employment, transportation, and public safety.
"We are taking a whole-of-government approach," Governor Newsom stated. He emphasized collaboration between government sectors and private partners to create a more equitable system that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The declaration serves not only as recognition of ongoing efforts but also celebrates the contributions these individuals make throughout California. "We’ll continue working across sectors and disciplines to ensure that all Californians with intellectual and developmental disabilities can thrive," Newsom added.
The proclamation was signed by Governor Newsom on March 17th, 2025, reaffirming California's commitment to inclusivity.
