California Attorney General Rob Bonta, along with 20 other state attorneys general, has filed amicus briefs supporting WilmerHale and Jenner & Block in their lawsuits against the Trump Administration. The attorneys argue that the administration's executive orders, which target law firms based on their representation of certain clients, violate First Amendment rights and the foundational principles of American democracy.

"The Trump Administration’s disregard for the First Amendment and disrespect for foundational tenets of American democracy is egregious and alarming," stated Attorney General Bonta. He continued to express strong support for WilmerHale and Jenner & Block, commending their refusal to comply with what he considers unconstitutional demands. Bonta urged the court to grant permanent injunctions to prevent what he termed the President’s attempts to undermine the judicial system.

The amicus brief argues that the executive orders not only violate the First and Sixth Amendments but also severely undermine the rule of law. Bonta, known for his outspoken criticism of President Trump’s actions against the legal system, has previously urged the legal community to band together in defense of legal norms, particularly in light of the President's threats and retributive actions.

Previously, Bonta supported another law firm, Perkins Coie, which was similarly targeted by the administration for its client choices and policies promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. By joining attorneys general from multiple states, Bonta continues his call to push back against any violations of democratic norms.
