Sacramento — Governor Gavin Newsom has declared April 2025 as Arab American Heritage Month, acknowledging the contributions of Arab Americans to California's societal fabric. In a proclamation, Governor Newsom emphasized the diverse make-up of the Arab American community, which includes over 20 nationalities and various religious groups.

The proclamation highlights the legacy of Nagi Daifullah, a Yemeni migrant and farmworker known for his significant role during the United Farm Workers’ 1973 grape strike. Governor Newsom noted the ongoing work on Nagi Daifullah Unity Park in Tulare County, which honors Daifullah’s influence in the labor movement. The proclamation also celebrates the recognition of Little Arabia in Anaheim as the first official Arab American enclave in the United States.

Governor Newsom acknowledged the challenges that Arab Americans face, such as discrimination and xenophobia, noting that efforts are being made across California to enhance security at places of worship, provide services for hate victims, and promote inclusivity.

Emphasizing the significant impact of Arab Americans, Governor Newsom stated, “Whether they’ve called America home for many generations or arrived more recently, Arab Americans have enriched communities across the country.”

The Governor concluded his proclamation affirming the state’s commitment to the safety and belonging of Arab Americans within California. The proclamation was signed on April 3, 2025, by Governor Gavin Newsom and attested by Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D.
