UC Berkeley recently concluded its ambitious capital campaign, Light the Way: The Campaign for Berkeley, surpassing its initial $6 billion goal by raising an impressive $7.37 billion. This achievement marks the largest total in history for any public university and any university without a medical school.
Julie Hooper, vice chancellor for University Development and Alumni Relations, highlighted the success of the campaign, attributing it to Berkeley's innovation, inspiration, and commitment to public service. She expressed gratitude towards the donors, stating, "Our donors believe in the good that is Berkeley, and their historic support of this campaign is second to none."
One significant contribution to the campaign came from Berkeley alumna, faculty member, and philanthropist Nadine Tang. Her generous gift will fund a critical upgrade to Moffitt Library, now renamed as the Carol T. Christ Center for Connected Learning at Moffitt Library in honor of Chancellor Carol Christ. Reflecting on this honor, Christ expressed her delight, emphasizing the importance of supporting research and student interaction within the library.
The funds raised through the campaign will have a widespread impact, including support for new faculty positions, graduate student aid, research endeavors, and campus improvements. The campaign's success amid challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and societal unrest underscores the generosity and commitment of the donors.
Of the total funds raised, more than 94% came from a small percentage of donors, with contributions from individuals worldwide. Hooper emphasized the significance of donations of all sizes, stating, "the impact of many smaller scale commitments should not be underestimated."
As UC Berkeley looks towards the future, the completion of the Light the Way campaign sets the stage for continued support of vital student, faculty, research, and campus initiatives. The university will hold Big Give, an annual fundraising event, to further advance causes across the campus.
In conclusion, UC Berkeley's Light the Way campaign has not only surpassed its fundraising goal but has also solidified the university's position as a leader in research and teaching, thanks to the generosity and belief of its donors.
