The Goleta Police Department has announced plans to conduct a DUI checkpoint on Saturday, April 6, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the City of Goleta. The decision to set up the checkpoint at this specific time and place is based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests in the area.
In a statement, Sergeant Noel Rivas emphasized the importance of these checkpoints in promoting public safety by deterring drivers from getting behind the wheel while impaired. Rivas stated, "We are hopeful that these checkpoints will continue to educate the public of the dangers of drinking and driving." He also advised individuals to plan ahead for alternative means of transportation if they anticipate consuming alcohol.
The Goleta Police Department highlighted that impaired driving does not only result from alcohol consumption but can also be influenced by prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs. The department urged drivers to always follow usage instructions and be aware of any warnings related to driving after taking medication.
Furthermore, the department reminded the public that driving under the influence of marijuana, whether for medicinal or recreational purposes, is illegal. They strongly advised individuals who may be impaired to stay at home instead of risking their safety and that of others on the road.
Individuals charged with a first-time DUI offense could face significant fines and penalties, amounting to an average of $13,500, along with a suspended license. The funding for the DUI checkpoint program was made possible through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It is also noted that the City of Goleta collaborates with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services in the region.
