The California Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring AB 2876 (Berman; D-Palo Alto), a bill aimed at promoting artificial intelligence literacy in California schools. The bill, which will be heard in the Assembly Education Committee, is designed to equip students with the necessary skills to thrive in an AI-driven future.
Assemblymember Marc Berman emphasized the importance of AI literacy, stating, “AI has the potential to positively impact the way we live, but only if we know how to use it, and use it responsibly.” Berman highlighted the need for all students to understand basic AI principles, applications, implications, limitations, and ethical considerations to effectively engage with AI technologies.
AB 2876 proposes that all K-12 students in California receive instruction in AI literacy by incorporating AI content into the mathematics, science, and history-social science curriculum frameworks. CalChamber Policy Advocate Ronak Daylami expressed support for the bill, noting that integrating AI education into existing curricula will help students become discerning users of AI and prepare them for success in an AI-driven workforce.
Daylami emphasized the importance of providing students with foundational knowledge and skills to identify, understand, and utilize AI technologies in their future workplaces and daily lives. By fostering AI literacy among students, California aims to harness the potential of AI technology and inspire the next generation of computer scientists.
