The California Chamber of Commerce has unveiled its 2024 job killer list, highlighting nine bills that could have significant negative impacts on the state's business environment. CalChamber President and CEO Jennifer Barrera expressed concerns about the proposed legislation, stating that they would impose additional costs and burdens on small businesses in California.
Barrera emphasized the importance of lawmakers carefully considering the implications of these bills on local employers and businesses. She commended Governor and Legislative leadership for ruling out new taxes this year, particularly noting that two bills on the job killer list aim to raise taxes to fund unemployment insurance benefit hikes.
Among the bills on the 2024 CalChamber Job Killer List are SB 1434, which proposes substantial increases to unemployment insurance taxes, and SB 1116, which seeks to allow striking workers to claim UI benefits, potentially burdening employers with additional debt. Additionally, AB 2374 would impose joint liability on businesses contracting for janitorial services, while AB 2751 would restrict employee communications during certain hours.
Other bills on the list include SB 903, which aims to ban all uses of PFAS in commercial and consumer products, and AB 2200, which would mandate all Californians to enroll in a new state government health plan, eliminating Medicare for seniors and potentially increasing taxes by $250 billion annually.
The 2024 Job Killer List also includes legislation such as SB 1345, AB 2499, ACA 16, and AB 2200, each addressing various labor, employment, environmental, and healthcare issues.
