California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a stern demand to the Modesto Pregnancy Center, urging the entity to prove that its sexual education program aligns with state law. The Center, also known as Personal Health Now, has been providing sexual education curriculum to Modesto City Schools District, claiming to meet the requirements of the California Healthy Youth Act. However, complaints from parents have raised doubts about the program's compliance with state regulations.

In a letter sent to the Center, Attorney General Bonta emphasized the importance of unbiased and comprehensive sexual education for students, stating, "Access to unbiased and comprehensive sexual education for students is not just a matter of choice; it is a fundamental necessity that builds a foundation of success for our children." Bonta further stressed the need for inclusive, evidence-based education that empowers youth to make informed decisions and lead fulfilling lives.

The California Healthy Youth Act mandates that public schools in the state must provide comprehensive sexual health education that is age-appropriate, medically accurate, and free from religious doctrine. Attorney General Bonta, responsible for enforcing California's laws, has demanded that the Modesto Pregnancy Center substantiate its claims of providing accurate and scientifically sound personal health information, aligned sex education programs, and compliance with state regulations.

Failure to provide evidence of compliance within the stipulated 20-day deadline may lead to legal action against the Center. Concerns have been raised about the omission of certain topics in the curriculum, such as comprehensive discussions of abortion and students' right to access abortion care. Attorney General Bonta's demand for information under Section 17508 underscores the commitment to ensuring that students receive accurate and unbiased sexual education in line with California standards.

The scrutiny on the Modesto Pregnancy Center's sexual education program highlights the Attorney General's dedication to upholding the California Healthy Youth Act and safeguarding the quality of education provided to students in public schools.
