UC Berkeley Professor John Connelly expressed his relief upon being named one of the 188 new Guggenheim Fellows, describing the honor as a chance to have more time to think and write in peace. Connelly, a historian, shared that the fellowship will provide him with the essential resource of time as he works on an extensive project on German history. He noted, "With more time, one is also challenged to take risks, to go down paths, ask questions, travel places that one otherwise never would have considered in the first place."

Jennifer Redfearn, a Graduate School of Journalism Professor at UC Berkeley and a documentary filmmaker, highlighted that her fellowship will support new forms of visual storytelling and her research on how scientists are using AI and technology for conservation efforts. She expressed gratitude for the recognition and shared her enthusiasm for exploring innovative ways to engage the public in critical issues.

Redfearn's extensive experience in producing documentaries for various renowned outlets has been praised for its engrossing and poignant storytelling. Her work often delves into human stories, such as in her Academy Award-nominated film "Sun Come Up" and the Emmy-nominated documentary "Apart."

Connelly, who is the Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor of History at Berkeley, focuses his scholarship on the history of East and Central Europe, comparative education, and the history of nationalism. The Guggenheim Foundation President, Edward Hirsch, emphasized that the new fellows were selected for their dedication to addressing the profound challenges facing humanity today.

In conclusion, Connelly reflected on the significance of the fellowship, expressing gratitude to those who have supported his academic journey. He noted that such honors do not come frequently in one's lifetime and emphasized the importance of acknowledging the contributions of teachers, colleagues, and students. The recognition as a Guggenheim Fellow serves as a time for celebration and reflection on the collective effort that has made such opportunities possible.

Andrea Lampros from the Graduate School of Journalism and Kenny Ma from Berkeley Social Sciences contributed to this report.
