California Governor Gavin Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom joined forces to dedicate the state's first new park in nearly a decade on Earth Day. The new state park, Dos Rios, located just 8 miles west of Modesto in the Central Valley, is set to open on June 12, coinciding with the Third Annual State Parks Week.
Governor Newsom expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “There’s no better way to spend Earth Day than celebrating California’s first new state park in nearly a decade. The Golden State’s natural beauty is unmatched and we’re laser-focused on ensuring every Californian can enjoy these spaces.” He emphasized the park's significance in combating the climate crisis through habitat restoration for wildlife at the Tuolumne and San Joaquin Rivers.
First Partner Siebel Newsom also shared her thoughts on Earth Day, saying, “Earth Day is always such a beautiful reminder that our planet is a shared space and its health and future are dependent on our individual and communal commitment to restoration and regeneration.” She highlighted the collaborative effort behind Dos Rios, describing it as a place designed through partnership.
California State Parks Director Armando Quintero outlined the vision for Dos Rios, describing it as a journey into the past and a local escape adjacent to two rivers and a wildlife refuge. He emphasized State Parks' commitment to ensuring access for all Californians and crafting the park in partnership with the public, tribal partners, and stakeholders.
The restoration of Dos Rios was made possible through a 10-year, $40 million project in partnership with River Partners, a nonprofit organization. River Partners President Julie Rentner praised the project as a step towards a vibrant, resilient future, connecting underserved Central Valley communities with sustainable water solutions and wildlife conservation efforts.
As planning continues, the official name and park classification of Dos Rios will soon be determined by the California State Park and Recreation Commission. State Parks will provide further updates about the opening of Dos Rios in the coming weeks.
