Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the success of California's counternarcotics operation, revealing the seizure of over 1.1 million fentanyl pills and 523 pounds of methamphetamine in the past week. This achievement was made possible through the collaboration of the California National Guard’s Counterdrug Task Force, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In a statement, Governor Newsom emphasized the state's commitment to combatting drug trafficking, stating, "We are doing our job to keep illegal drugs off the streets of California. By working with our state, local and federal partners, we are continuing to crack down on drug trafficking in our communities."
Under Governor Newsom's leadership, California has been actively involved in efforts to curb the smuggling of illegal drugs. Operations supported by CalGuard have led to significant seizures, including over 1 million fentanyl pills in February and a visit to the California-Mexico border to discuss key issues with President Biden and senior White House officials.
The Governor's dedication to addressing drug trafficking is evident in the increased deployment of CalGuard service members to interdict drugs at U.S. ports of entry, resulting in record seizures of fentanyl. With a $30 million investment to expand CalGuard's work, California is focused on preventing drug trafficking by transnational criminal organizations.
Since taking office in 2019, Governor Newsom has allocated over $1 billion to combat opioid trafficking, enforce the law, support those with opioid use disorder, and raise awareness about the dangers of opioids. His Master Plan for Tackling the Fentanyl and Opioid Crisis outlines a comprehensive strategy to enhance the impact of these investments.
