May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and the Goleta Police Department is urging both cyclists and drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. Sergeant Noel Rivas emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating, “Everyone deserves to reach their destination safely...if you see a bicyclist — please slow down.”

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal concerning trends, with 1,105 bike-related fatalities and 46,195 injuries in 2022 alone. These numbers represent a troubling increase from the previous year. To address these risks, the Goleta Police Department will be conducting targeted traffic safety operations on specific dates in May, focusing on behaviors that endanger cyclists and pedestrians.

In light of these safety concerns, the Goleta Police Department has issued guidelines for both drivers and cyclists to enhance road safety. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, exercise caution at intersections, and give cyclists ample space when passing. Additionally, it is crucial for drivers to avoid distractions and impairment while behind the wheel.

For cyclists, the department recommends using lights at night, wearing a helmet for head protection, adhering to traffic flow, and yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks. These safety measures aim to reduce the risk of accidents and injuries for all road users.

The funding for these safety initiatives comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is essential for all road users to remain vigilant and considerate to ensure the safety of everyone sharing the roadways.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office, which oversees police services for the City of Goleta, plays a crucial role in promoting road safety and enforcing traffic regulations.
