State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond commended three exceptional educators from California today as finalists for the 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Thurmond expressed, “These amazing teachers model excellence in how we prepare California students for the challenges and advancements of the future. Let me offer my sincere congratulations to these educators, whom we honor for their leadership and instructional practices and how they are inspiring a new generation with passion and talent for science, technology, engineering, and math.”
The PAEMST program, administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government specifically for kindergarten through grade twelve science, mathematics, engineering, and computer science teaching. Recipients of the Presidential Award are celebrated at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., and are granted a $10,000 special award from the National Science Foundation.
Suzanne, who has been teaching for 12 years, is one of the finalists. She teaches a Special Day Class of fourth and fifth graders at Whitaker Elementary School. Suzanne's dedication to education also extends to her involvement in various leadership teams and programs aimed at enhancing math education and professional development.
Cherene, with 32 years of teaching experience, is another finalist. She serves as the Science Resource for grades one through five and is committed to promoting STEM education through mentorship programs and curriculum development. Cherene's innovative teaching methods and emphasis on representation in science education set her apart as a distinguished educator.
Dr. Uzoff, a Project Lead the Way Teacher and STEAM Specialist for kindergarten through grade five, is the third finalist. With 17 years of teaching experience, Dr. Uzoff is recognized for her efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM education. Her student-centric approach and focus on experiential learning contribute to a dynamic and engaging classroom environment.
The California Department of Education collaborates with the California Mathematics Council and the California Association of Science Educators to identify nominees for the PAEMST program. Applicants are evaluated based on criteria such as subject mastery, instructional methods, lifelong learning, and leadership in education. Each candidate is required to submit a video lesson in support of their application.
These exceptional educators exemplify the commitment to excellence in teaching and the promotion of STEM education in California. For more information on the PAEMST program, interested individuals can visit the CDE PAEMST web page or the PAEMST website.
