California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D., is scheduled to visit her high school alma mater, Manual Arts High School, in Los Angeles on Thursday, May 16, 2024. As the state's Chief Elections Officer, Secretary Weber oversees the administration and enforcement of election laws as well as laws pertaining to a variety of policy areas including political reform, business programs, archives, information technology, and management services.

During her visit, Secretary Weber will meet with Principal Alejandro Macias and his administration, representatives from the student government and students in classrooms.

“The mission of Manual Arts is to develop successful, resilient, and self-reliant students to be advocates for change in their school, community, and on a global scale. Being an advocate for change is a crucial part of democracy. I’m excited to have the opportunity to share my background, hear what the students of Manual Arts have to say, and discuss the importance of voting and civic engagement with them,” Secretary Weber said.

In California, individuals who are 16 or 17 years old can pre-register to vote if they meet specific requirements.
