On Saturday, May 11, 2024, nearly 8,000 students gathered at California Memorial Stadium to receive their bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees from UC Berkeley. The commencement ceremony was attended by approximately 20,000 family members and friends of the graduates.
Amidst a blend of traditional academic celebration and protest, UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ addressed the graduating class. She encouraged them saying, "as you stand at one of life’s great crossroads, take a deep breath … pause … reflect … and consider the road you have traveled, and all of that you can and will carry with you from Berkeley into your personal and professional futures."
The event marked a significant milestone for the class of 2024. Despite being accompanied by protests and having faced challenges such as COVID-era isolation, these students have demonstrated resilience and compassion throughout their journey.
The day was filled with words of encouragement from various speakers including the University Medalist who urged graduates to look beyond labels. Similarly, the keynote speaker reminded them that 'the ball is in their hands' now.
As they step into their future roles in society, UC Berkeley's top senior found his purpose through tutoring at San Quentin. His experience is just one example of how these graduates are ready to contribute to society in meaningful ways.
