Cynt Marshall, a UC Berkeley alumna and CEO of the Dallas Mavericks basketball team, addressed the Class of 2024 at their commencement ceremony on May 11. In her keynote speech, Marshall encouraged graduates to embrace their future roles with responsibility and integrity.
"You are now playing the game of life," Marshall stated. She reflected on her own experiences as a student at UC Berkeley, emphasizing resilience and focus. "This girl from the Easter Hill public housing projects in Richmond, California, was serious about her college opportunity," she said.
Marshall highlighted the historical significance of UC Berkeley's campus, noting its role in the Free Speech Movement 60 years ago. She praised the graduates for their perseverance through challenging times, particularly those who missed traditional high school milestones due to global events.
Addressing Chancellor Christ, faculty members, parents, and loved ones, Marshall expressed gratitude for their support of the students. "Parents and loved ones... you have invested a lot in your young person. Today, you are getting the return on your investment," she remarked.
Marshall used sports metaphors to convey her message. She advised graduates to be mindful of their choices and relationships: "The ball I am talking about today is different. The playing field is global and multi-dimensional." She outlined six key principles: keeping good company, understanding one's role in society, making wise decisions between urgent and non-urgent matters (crystal balls vs rubber balls), maintaining integrity, rebounding from setbacks with grace, and conducting oneself with gratitude, readiness, openness, willingness to address injustices, and kindness.
"May God bless your hands as you pick up the ball. May God bless your feet as you take to the court," Marshall concluded.
