Chancellor Christ addressed the graduating class of 2024 with a message that highlighted both their achievements and the pressing issues facing the world today. "Let me begin by offering my heartfelt congratulations to you, the members of this remarkable and resilient graduating class," she said. Acknowledging the challenges posed by recent events, she praised the graduates for their perseverance.

Before delving into her graduation remarks, Chancellor Christ commented on an ongoing protest on campus related to violence in Gaza. "Students have been camping around Sproul Hall for almost three weeks," she noted, expressing her own distress over the situation. She also condemned civilian casualties in Israel from a terrorist attack on October 7th and lamented how these conflicts have divided the campus community.

Chancellor Christ emphasized the importance of civil discourse amid political tensions, stating, "We have lost the ability to talk with one another. I feel passionately that we must work to regain this capacity, whatever our beliefs and perspectives."

Reflecting on recent global events and the impact of COVID-19, she commended students for navigating complicated times successfully. "Your presence here today is testimony to a remarkable accomplishment whose meaning and worth will serve you well in the days to come," she remarked.

She urged graduates to express gratitude towards those who supported them throughout their academic journey and acknowledged Berkeley's faculty and staff for their dedication. Highlighting Berkeley's commitment to knowledge and societal betterment, she stated, "What animates Berkeley is our belief in, and commitment to, individual and institutional agency."

Chancellor Christ concluded by encouraging graduates to leverage their education for positive change: "Now, more than ever, the world needs all that you have to offer as beneficiaries of a Berkeley education." She expressed her hopes for their future success and fulfillment.

The ceremony also featured UC Regent John Pérez, whom Chancellor Christ praised as a dedicated advocate for affordable education. She expressed deep gratitude for his contributions.

In closing her address with optimism and pride in what lies ahead for the graduates, Chancellor Christ wished them rewarding futures filled with happiness.
