The UC Davis Career Center has changed its name, dropping "Internship" from its title to enhance accessibility for students. This decision followed feedback from student focus groups and data analysis by Student Affairs Marketing and Communication (SAMC).
Students participating in SAMC's focus groups found the term "internship" redundant as it is implicit within the concept of a career. Additionally, the abbreviation ICC was confusing for many new students.
"SAMC found that the ICC acronym meant nothing to incoming students," explained Executive Director Marcie Kirk Holland. "When people said, 'Go to the ICC,' students didn’t know what they meant."
The name change will be accompanied by updates to the Career Center's website, aiming to reduce acronyms and simplify service names. These adjustments are intended to address misconceptions that students need prior knowledge or experience to use the center's services.
One specific change includes renaming "Resume Boost" to "Resume Review with the Career Center," clarifying its purpose. This service will now be available at various campus locations, including each college.
These modifications aim to make services more accessible and understandable for all students. Kirk Holland emphasized, “We are committed to paying attention to the feedback that we get. Equity and accessibility are a cornerstone of our work.”
