The University of California Office of the President's Retirement Program Services division has alerted recipients of the UC Retirement Savings Plans to recent fraudulent activities affecting accounts maintained by Fidelity. According to a statement from the division, "Fidelity’s cybersecurity team has identified the issue, closed the vulnerability, and taken immediate steps to protect all potentially affected accounts. Outreach to the 120 affected participants has begun."
Fidelity has assured account holders that they will be reimbursed for any losses resulting from unauthorized activity, as long as these are not due to their own actions. The full details of this protection can be found on Fidelity's website.
Account holders are advised to regularly check their accounts and review their profile information, especially contact details used for multi-factor authentication (MFA) and account alerts. Fidelity will notify users of any changes in their profiles. If unusual activity is detected, it should be reported immediately by calling Fidelity at 866-682-7787.
To further secure accounts, users are encouraged to use a third-party authenticator app such as Duo or Google Authenticator. This additional security measure requires downloading an app from a mobile device's app store and following specific steps on Fidelity’s website to complete enrollment.
