Nox, a young peregrine falcon from UC Berkeley, was returned to the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital on Tuesday, October 22. The bird, who had previously undergone surgery for a broken wing at the same facility last summer, was found in Richmond on Monday suffering from acute emaciation. This discovery came just three days after Nox had been released into the wild following several months of rehabilitation.

The California Raptor Center at UC Davis reported that Nox received a blood transfusion from Phoenix, an ambassador peregrine falcon. "He looks much better than he did when he came in," said Michelle Hawkins, director of the California Raptor Center. Despite his current stable condition and ability to eat, Hawkins cautioned that Nox is "not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination."

The reasons behind Nox's emaciation remain unclear. Those interested in updates about his condition can visit the UC Davis California Raptor Center Facebook page.
