UC Berkeley's youngest falcon, Nox, has died after a brief return to the wild. Released last Friday following surgery for a broken wing and extensive rehabilitation, Nox was found in Richmond on Monday and taken to UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with acute emaciation.
After receiving a blood transfusion from Phoenix, an ambassador peregrine falcon, Nox showed signs of improvement. However, Michelle Hawkins, director of the UC Davis California Raptor Center, cautioned that he was “not out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination.”
UC Davis wildlife specialists expressed their sorrow in a statement today about Nox’s passing and announced that a post-mortem exam is underway to determine the cause. Further updates will be shared on the UC Davis California Raptor Center Facebook page. A detailed story about Nox will also be available later on Berkeley News.
