As of October 19, fire conditions in Berkeley have been downgraded from Extreme Fire Weather to a Red Flag Warning. A Red Flag Warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or expected soon, contributing to an increased wildfire risk. The Berkeley Fire Department uses the term "Extreme Fire Weather" when forecasted wind speeds and humidity levels during a Red Flag Warning create especially risky conditions in the area.
UC Berkeley is actively monitoring the situation alongside the City of Berkeley response partners. Alerts will be sent via WarnMe if necessary, while the City of Berkeley will communicate through AC Alert and radio station 1610AM.
To mitigate risks and comply with city warnings, UC Berkeley urges adherence to precautionary measures on campus. Despite the downgrade in fire conditions, vigilance is advised during Homecoming weekend. Community members are encouraged to keep their phones accessible for updates and sign up for texts from WarnMe.
The message was signed by Amy Chen, Campus Fire Marshal; Jason Ferguson, Director of Emergency Management; and Marc Fisher, Vice Chancellor of Administration.
