State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has announced the selection of two high school students to represent California in the 63rd annual United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Sarah Gao from Canyon Crest Academy in San Diego and Bode Gower from Ukiah High School were chosen for their leadership skills, community involvement, and academic achievements.
Thurmond expressed pride in the students' accomplishments. "I am incredibly proud of and impressed by these extraordinary students, who are doing so much in their schools and communities to make a difference in the lives of others. Their significant accomplishments speak to their impressive character and dedication," he said. "They will make excellent representatives for California."
In case either delegate cannot attend, alternates have been named: James Miller from Westlake High School and Sriya Srinivasan from Early College High School.
Thurmond commended all four students for their advocacy work on issues such as environmental science, rural education, equity, mental health awareness, health education, and social justice. "Our four students have demonstrated strong leadership and a passion for making positive changes through advocacy work," he said.
The USSYP offers selected students an opportunity to learn about the U.S. Senate and federal government operations during Washington Week. Participants receive a $10,000 scholarship and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., where they meet government officials.
Students must be nominated by their principals to participate. Selection is based on leadership abilities, academic achievement, involvement in school activities, extracurricular activities, and commitment to public service.
Sarah Gao has been recognized for her roles in various leadership positions including President of the School Site Council at Canyon Crest Academy. Her contributions include climate reports preparation for San Diego's city council and founding initiatives like Coast2Canyon.
Bode Gower holds positions such as Associate Student Body President at Ukiah High School. He founded the Northern California Youth Policy Coalition to address challenges facing rural communities.
James Miller serves as Vice President of West County of Ventura County Young Democrats among other roles aimed at educational equity through his Ventura County Education Network initiative.
Sriya Srinivasan is noted for her role as student trustee at Solano Community College and her advocacy efforts through founding clubs focused on reproductive health.
The delegates will be recognized by the State Board of Education during its meeting on January 15–16, 2024.
