The Goleta Police Department is urging the public to drive responsibly during the holiday season. The reminder comes as part of a national enforcement campaign, "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," which begins on December 17. This initiative aims to prevent impaired driving and ensure road safety.
In December 2022, there were 1,062 fatalities in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes across the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. To address this issue, Goleta police will have deputies on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The department advises people to either stay in for the night or plan ahead by arranging a ride or designating a sober driver if they intend to consume alcohol. They also emphasize that impairment can result from not only alcohol but also prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances. If you plan on consuming any such substances with potential impairment effects, it is recommended to let someone who is sober take the wheel.
Additionally, citizens are encouraged to report any suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
This program receives funding from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
