California Attorney General Rob Bonta recently hosted the fourth in a series of five regional meetings focused on immigrant rights in Salinas, California. The convening addressed concerns regarding the President-elect's threats of mass arrests, detention, and deportation. During the meeting, Bonta and staff from the California Department of Justice (CADOJ) provided resources and discussed ongoing efforts to protect immigrant communities in the state.

Attorney General Bonta has released various guidances over the past two months aimed at helping immigrants understand their rights and assisting public institutions in aligning with state laws. These resources are available in multiple languages on the CADOJ website.

"As Inauguration Day approaches, I know there is a great deal of fear, anxiety, and uncertainty among California’s immigrant communities," said Attorney General Bonta. "No matter who is in the White House, our resolve and commitment to California values will not waiver."

The guidance provided includes information about immigration rights such as housing applications without disclosing immigration status unless federally funded affordable housing is involved. It also covers access to emergency medical care for all individuals regardless of status and legal assistance rights during arrests or detentions by ICE.

Additional guidelines were issued for educational institutions ensuring free public education access for all children irrespective of immigration status while maintaining confidentiality of personal information. Furthermore, warnings against immigration scams were shared along with advice on seeking legitimate legal aid organizations.

Guidance was also extended to public institutions aiming to limit support for immigration enforcement activities within their premises. This includes model policies for various sectors like healthcare facilities, schools, courts, libraries, shelters, and labor-related divisions.
